Whether you're at Albany House for a week or just a weekend, you'll be surprised at the variety of activities available.
Hit the Sugar River Trail
The 23-mile Sugar River Trail was one of Wisconsin's first "Rails to Trails" projects. The trail offers level biking, hiking, snowbiling and cross country skiing through picturesque rolling hills, verdant meadows and state wildlife areas. From Albany House, Brodhead is 7 miles to the south (don't miss the covered bridge) and New Glarus is 16 miles to the northwest. There are places to stop along the way for lunch or other breaks. Bike rentals are available in New Glarus. Don't forget to purchase your trail pass at the mini-mart before you head out.
Other major trails in the area include the Military Ridge trail from Madison to Dodgeville and the Cheese Country trail in Monroe.
The Total Swiss Experience
Over the years, New Glarus has become a tourist destination offering authentic cuisine, folk festivals, a Swiss historical perspective and unique shopping opportunities. Dining options range from casual cafes to comfortable taverns to European fine dining. For anyone interested in Swiss culture, the Swiss Historical Village and Chalet of the Golden Fleece are open from May through October. The Heidi and Wilhelm Tell Festivals bring legends to life, and music fills the air during Volkfest and Polkafest.
Or there's the Norwegian Experience
Mount Horeb claims to be the "Troll Capital" of the world, and the many carvings along the Trollway welcome you to specialty shops including the Mustard Museum. If you're in a historical mood, check out Little Norway, a Norwegian pioneer homestead. For a more active adventure, strap on some skis at Tyrol Basin or visit Cave of the Mounds, a registered National Natural Landmark.Golf Anyone?
If you are looking for a few rounds of golf while you stay at Albany House, stop by the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club or the ARGUE-ment "Pasture Golf" Course in New Glarus, or Decatur Lake Country Club in Brodhead.Culture in Spring Green
Head west for an architectural adventure at Taliesin, Frank Llloyd Wright's former home and still-active studio. Or experience a different type of "culture" at the House on the Rock, another man's imaginitive house and museum. Enjoy Shakespeare in a unique, outdoor setting at American Players Theatre. You can pack a picinic dinner from the supply store in Spring Green or purchase a box dinner at the theatre.Take a Scenic Drive
On your way to and from these destinations, take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings. Take Highway 39 west out of New Glarus on your way to Mineral Point or House on the Rock, or Highway 92 north to the Mt. Horeb area. Watch for the "Rustic Road" designation on some of the less traveled roads. Then just sit back and enjoy the ride!
A Summer Saturday in Madison
After breakfast, take a 30-minute drive to Madison and join the crowd at the Dane County Farmers Market. See what's in season and hang out on the Capital lawn with a fresh snack. Stroll down State Street and browse your way to the lakeside terrace on the University of Wisconsin campus. Stay for dinner and try one of the many ethnic restaurants Madison has to offer. Check out the Madison Area Guide to find out what's happening this week.Calendar of Events
